Legislative Assembly is for Students!
The WSPTA is holding a Student Advocacy Night on Tuesday, September 15th from 6:30 PM — 7:30 PM, and we’d love for you to come. Here’s what we’re doing:
The Civics Center is coming to talk about how to run a voter registration drive at your school. After that, we’ll go over a recognition program where if your PTA hosts a drive and sends us photos, we’ll send back a certificate, provide recognition, and a prize! Our goal is to see as many PTAs/students host a voter drive as possible. More information will be shared at the event.
Then we’ll have the WSPTA Advocacy Director on to answer questions: how the Legislative Assembly actually works, how an issue ends up on the legislative platform, and what a student can realistically do if there’s something they want to change, and much more. Students will have time to ask their own questions too.
Please prepare as many questions as you’d like to ask! This is a great way to come learn why students should attend Legislative Assembly too! Parents/Guardians are always allowed to join and listen but this is a student lead workshop run by students for students. Register today!
We are hosting our first ever Washington State PTA Essay Prompt Contest! Every year, the PTA runs an essay contest open to Kindergarteners through 12th Graders, giving them a chance to share their ideas, creativity, thoughtfulness, great ideas, and their writing skills. Through this contest, we aim to inspire and encourage creativity in young minds across the state.
This year, we are introducing another contest to accompany the essay contest – the Essay Prompt Contest! In this contest, students tell us something they would like to write about – a prompt for the actual essay contest. From September 1 to October 12 at 10:00 PM, students are able to send their ideas for a thoughtful, creative, deep, and interesting prompt to be selected. If their prompt/theme is selected, they will receive a $25 Amazon Gift Card, and be honored at the student programs celebration! There are separate categories for grades K‑2, 3–5, 6–8, and 9–12. From each category, the top 3 prompts will be selected.
Ultimately, the success of this competition is dependent on the participation we receive. Please send this out to your school and community, and help us encourage students across the state to express their love for writing! Questions? Please email Michelle Weinmaster at michelle.weinmaster@wastatepta.org. Happy applying, and we can’t wait to read your ideas! Essay Prompt Contest Application link
